Private Schools in Worcestershire

Independent education in Worcestershire combines some of the oldest academic foundations in the English-speaking world with internationally renowned boarding campuses and intimate rural day schools. In the cathedral city of Worcester, two historic powerhouses sit less than a mile apart: RGS Worcester traces its origins to a secular monastic school founded around 685 AD and holds a 1561 Royal Charter from Elizabeth I, while King's Worcester was refounded in 1541 by Henry VIII alongside Worcester Cathedral. Further north, Bromsgrove School was established as a Tudor grammar school in 1553 and later became one of the original 14 founding schools of the Headmasters' Conference (HMC) in 1869. Alongside Malvern College—founded in 1865 at the foot of the Malvern Hills and famous for educating C.S. Lewis and multiple Nobel laureates—Bromsgrove has helped make the county a major UK hub for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma alongside traditional A-Levels. While Worcestershire's ancient boys' schools have all transitioned to full co-education, the county still offers distinctive single-sex and faith options, including Malvern St James for girls and Madinatul Uloom Al Islamiya, an Islamic boys' boarding school founded in 1987. Beyond these large historic institutions, families are well served by smaller, close-knit independent day and through-schools such as Bowbrook House School and Heathfield Knoll School, which focus on small class sizes and tailored pastoral care.
